Good day, Dr. Drosten.

I am an independent researcher who is documenting early events involving the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching out to you with an inquiry about the paper “Detection of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) by real-time RT-PCR.”, on which you are corresponding author.

The paper states, “Before public release of virus sequences from cases of 2019-nCoV, we relied on social media reporting announcing detection of a SARS-like virus. We thus assumed that a SARS related CoV involved in the outbreak. We downloaded all complete and partial (if greater than 400 nt) SARS-related virus sequences available in GenBank by 1 January 2020.”

Could you direct me to the social media reports upon which you were relying?

Thank you kindly,

Jessica Hockett, PhD
